In 2012, having been lost for over 500 years, the remains of King Richard III were discovered beneath a car park in Leicester. The search had been orchestrated by an amateur historian, Philippa Langley, whose unrelenting research had been met with incomprehension by her friends and family and with scepticism by experts and academics. The Lost King is the life-affirming true story of a woman who refused to be ignored and who took on the country's most eminent historians, forcing them to think again about one of the most controversial kings in England’s history.

STEPHEN FREARS
Unanimously regarded as one of Britain’s finest directors, Stephen Frears has always embraced a wide variety of styles, themes and genres. After TV he turned to the cinema in the mid-1980s, shooting The Hit (1984). The following year he made My Beautiful Laundrette (1985) which altered the course of his career. After directing its companion piece Sammy And Rosie Get Laid and Prick Up Your Ears (1987, both), he began working in Hollywood, with Dangerous Liaisons (1988) and the Grifters (1990) for which he was Oscar®-nominated. Returning closer to home, he directed The Van (1996), Irish film, after a second spell of making American films The Hi-Lo Country (1998) and High Fidelity (2000), based himself largely in Britain. Frears showed his versatility with two vastly different movies - Dirty Pretty Things (2002) a realistic account of immigrant life in London, and Mrs Henderson Presents (2005) a nostalgic comedy-drama. For The Queen (2006) he was again nominated for an Oscar. He followed these with Philomena (2013), The Program (2015), about seven time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong; Florence Foster Jenkins (2016), starring Meryl Streep, and Victoria & Abdul (2017).
Reveiws:
Philomena’s director and screenwriters reunite for another charming true story, and another brilliant acting showcase.
David Canfield, Vanity Fair
Philomena was fine, but The Lost King is a growth ring, a richer, stronger, and more moving piece of work.
Owen Gleiberman, Variety
A winning account of an ordinary woman achieving the extraordinary.
Wendy Ide, Screendaily
