FILM ‘THE BEASTS’ – WINNER OF NINE SPANISH OSCARS AT 51st FEST

At the 37th Goya Awards ceremony held over the weekend, members of the Spanish Academy of Film Arts and Sciences gave Sorogoyen’s film the Goya Award for Best Film, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Leading Actor (Denis Ménochet), Best Supporting Actor (Luis Zahera), Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Original Score and Best Sound.

This unique contemporary western has already conquered cinemas in France and Spain, had its world premiere in Cannes, and was awarded at festivals in San Sebastian, Antalya, Tokyo, Almeria, Chicago, Hainan...

It is a story about a middle-aged French couple who move to Galicia, but their presence in the neighborhood causes tensions. Sorogoyen stated that it was a ‘fairy tale based on a true event’ and that he and screenwriter Isabel Peña had wanted to show today's ‘ubiquitous fanaticism, lack of dialogue and complete disregard for the other side's arguments.’

The lead roles are played by Marina Foïs, Denis Ménochet, Luis Zahera, Diego Anido, Marie Colomb...

‘The Beasts’ will be screened in the FEST programme on 28 February, in Hall 1 of MTS Hall (9.30 p.m.), on 1 March in the Belgrade Youth Centre (10.15 p.m.) and on 2 March in the Cultural Centre of Belgrade at 5 p.m.

There are 15 films from 17 countries in the Main Competition Programme.
‘The Beasts’ is Rodrigo Sorogoyen's fourth feature-length directorial effort. Sorogoyen made his debut as a co-director of ‘8 Dates’ (8 citas) with Peris Romano, after which he shot the acclaimed and award-winning films ‘May God Save Us’ (Que Dios nos perdone), ‘The Candidate’ (El reino) and ‘Mother’ (Madre). He was nominated for an Oscar for his short film ‘Mother’ (Madre).
